Named one of “24 People to Watch in 2004” by South Jersey Magazine, Randy Alexander is a board member of the Philadelphia Music Alliance (Philadelphia Walk of Fame) and a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, for which he does volunteer work as "Grammy in the Schools" instructor, panel moderator and panelist. He also has participated in panels for the CMJ Music Marathon and DIY Convention, and has been quoted as an industry expert both nationally (CBS Radio, CNN Radio) and regionally (Baltimore Sun, KYW Newsradio, Courier-Post of South Jersey). He successfully made the transition from daily newspapers to operating his own public relations firm after interviewing hundreds of celebrities and entertainment executives over 15 years covering music, TV, radio and Atlantic City casino entertainment for The Trenton (N.J.) Times.
A nationally respected music journalist and winner of three writing awards, he was one of the first to report on the Howard Stern phenomenon and establish a genuine rapport with the Man Who Would Be King of All Media, earning a first-place award from the New Jersey Press Association in the process. He has additional arts writing awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and Garden State Association of Black Journalists.
He spent over a month filing daily reports on the historic birth of Live Aid and marked the 10th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death on an extended mission to Memphis and Tupelo, Miss., to explore and uncover the roots of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He has been a daily contributor to America Online’s MusicSpace Channel, pop music critic for the Courier-Post (Gannett’s Southern New Jersey daily) and rock columnist for Action, the in-house publication of the Spectrum (now the Wachovia Spectrum) while it was Philadelphia’s leading entertainment arena. His coverage of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” tour was included in the best-selling biography, Glory Days.
Alexander lured an array of celebrities to his own talk radio show and has covered TV on national and local levels. Nationally, he attended the Television Critics Association press tours in Los Angeles and New York, made a cameo on ABC’s “One Life to Live’’ and was Philadelphia correspondent for Multichannel News, the cable industry trade. He also edited and wrote for two national cable guides published by TVSM.
Alexander started his journalism career in East Coast pro and college sports press boxes as an Amfax Communications correspondent covering championship events for the NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball. While still in college, he switched from sports to entertainment at The Philadelphia Journal, a sports- and entertainment-oriented daily tabloid. A Philadelphia native, Alexander holds a bachelor of arts degree in Journalism with a News-Editorial concentration from Temple University’s Annenberg School of Communications and Theater.
