BROTHERS
PAST
bio
Bubbling
up from Philadelphia and rippling across the nation is BROTHERS
PAST, a young, improv-oriented four-piece band that has recaptured the
passion lost with the so-called death of rock and rewired it for the
digital age.
Skillfully
blending effects-oriented improvisation and introspective, melodic
songwriting, BROTHERS PAST takes listeners into the Fourth Dimension with
layered audio soundscapes ranging from ambient-style space to
Earth-shaking explosiveness. The band creates an entirely
new range of sounds each night, grounded in an ever-expanding
repertoire of original songs, the latest of which can be found on its
retro-futuristic new concept album, A
WONDERFUL DAY.
Influenced
as much by Pink Floyd and the Beatles as Radiohead and Stereolab, A
WONDERFUL DAY is a cohesive piece that connects well-crafted, melodic
songs to weave an emotional tapestry surveying the paranoia, uncertainty
and frustration of insomnia. Ultimately, hope and triumph prevail against
a multi-textured sonic backdrop that transports the listener across the
digital divide into the darkness of night.
Leading
the sonic assault of BROTHERS PAST is guitarist Tom
Hamilton and his arsenal of effects, with Tom
McKee on keyboards, Clay
Parnell on bass and Rick
Lowenberg on drums. Three-part harmonies, mutated guitar effects and
hypnotic melodies are the dynamic signature of BROTHERS PAST. Without
batting an eye, the band shifts from ambient interlude to majestic anthem,
taking a left-turn to enter the world of musical breakdown: where beats
get redirected and redefined. Somehow it all makes sense. Despite the
musics fierce improvisational element, the bands songs are
undeniably catchy and accessible -- bordering on the psychedelic,
but rooted in traditional structure.
BROTHERS
PAST released its first CD, Elements,
in January, 2002 to critical acclaim by the New
Yorker, The Village Voice and Relix
Magazine, among others. Elements
was the first in a series of experimental live records on the bands
agenda.
A
WONDERFUL DAY,
the debut studio CD from BROTHERS PAST, is the result of more than 100
hours of mixing to create a cohesive, concept strong album unlike anything
before it. Conceptualized, written and recorded in just two weeks, the CD
is being nationally distributed through Leeways Home Grown Music
Network.
Though
the band has quickly become a staple on the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast
touring circuit, BROTHERS PAST will be touring from coast to coast behind A
WONDERFUL DAY in 2003. With lighting designer and sound engineer in
tow, BROTHERS PAST cant wait to turn on the nations concertgoers
with its hypnotic stage show.
Regulars
at the fabled Wetlands Preserve in New York City before its lamented
closing, BROTHERS PAST has played on stages of all sizes at home in
Philadelphia -- from the 100-capacity Khyber to the 25,000-capacity
Tweeter Center. At the Tweeter, BROTHERS PAST was part of the So Many
Roads Tour, starring Ratdog, Rusted Root, Karl Densons Tiny
Universe, DJ Logic and Keller Williams. BROTHERS PAST also has shared the
stage with the likes of Steve Kimock, The Disco Biscuits, The Derek Trucks
Band, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Deep Banana Blackout, Lake Trout, the New
Deal, ulu and members of Soulive, Soul Coughing and moe.
