"Philly's
MC": STEVE TREVELISE
Did you hear the one about the radio personality whos also a top
stand-up
comic?
Meet STEVE TREVELISE, who spends his weekdays helping Delaware Valley
residents negotiate rush-hour traffic, and his weekends making them
laugh at
area comedy clubs.
A veteran of local radio for more than 22 years, Steve currently handles
traffic reports for the popular Tom Joyner Morning Show on Philadelphias
WDAS-FM. Hes also the creator-host of the Humor You Can Use
segments on
Wilmingtons WRDX-FM. Since the mid-1980s, hes been heard on five
top-5
morning shows, including Howard Sterns.
But to regulars of the Comedy Cabaret chain of laugh lounges, Steve is
the
hilarious guy who is turning the role of comedy show MC into an art
form.
Rather than covet the headliners spot on the traditional three-comic
bills,
Steve has carved out a niche as Phillys MC.
I prefer to MC because you go on first, do your time, then do a
little more
as you bring up the other acts, he explains. The MCs job is to
get the
people into a laughing mood. Since my material is current and quick, I
can
fit a lot in, as well as play around with the audience.
Steve, whose radio career began at Trentons WPST-FM in the early 80s,
began doing comedy in the late 1980s. But it wasnt something he took
particularly seriously until he became part of disc jockey Glenn Kalinas
morning-show crew on Philadelphias WXYR-FM in 1999.
One morning, Miss Pennsylvania was a guest on the show, and she was
asked to
judge a beauty contest whose participants were Steve, Kalina and
another
male cast member. For the talent competition segment, Steve
performed a
comedy monologue. It was such a success he was asked to do one every
Friday
under the title, The Comedy Stylings of Steve Trevelise.
From that point, Steve dedicated himself to comedy. He studied under
favorite
Philly funny man Joey Callahan, and traveled to Los Angeles, where he
was a
pupil of legendary comedy writer, Gene Perret, Bob Hopes head
joke-maker.
Currently, Steve can be found virtually every weekend keeping audiences
loose
in one of the Delaware Valleys comedy clubs.
In addition to MCing, he also has opened for such headliners as Gabe
Kotter Kaplan and Todd Glass, and is a regular contributor to Stu
Bykofskys widely read gossip column in the Philadelphia Daily News.
Among
Steves many publish bon mots are:
***My dog loves the concept of bringing a tree into the house for
Christmas.
Hes hoping we bring in a fire hydrant for Easter!
***If you ever get pulled over for speeding, just tell the cop you
wanted to
get gas before the price went up.
***The Memorial Day weekend is when You go away for three days,
but your
money goes away forever.
So, if you ever find yourself asking Whats so funny? Now you
know: Its
the comedy of STEVE TREVELISE!
