Richard Lewis makes his
Bergen PAC debut, and his Englewood homecoming in this special
evening of comedy. Sharing the stage with Richard will be
comedian, Elayne Boosler..
Perhaps Mel Brooks put it best
when he said, "Richard Lewis may just be the Franz Kafka of
modern day comedy."
Richard Lewis has taken his life-long therapy
fodder and carved it into a commanding and compelling art form.
His early career as a stand-up brought him to the top of his
ranks and, over time, he has
broadened the scope of opportunities for others to share in his
brilliantly warped world.
This year, along with continuing personal appearances, Lewis
returns as a recurring guest star as one of Larry David's
closest friends (as is true in real life) in the Seinfeld
co-creator's HBO series, "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
Lewis' autobiographical book, "The OTHER Great Depression"
(2002) is a collection of fearless, essay style riffs featuring
Lewis' dark stream-of-consciousness personal observations.
With scores of guest appearances and TV series under his belt,
far and away his favorite was the four year run in ABC's
critically-acclaimed series "Anything But Love," co-starring
with Jamie Lee Curtis. He may hold title to having the most late
night appearances, chalking up over 50 each on Late Night with
David Letterman and the Tonight Show alone.
His special, "I'm Exhausted," aired on HBO and earned him an ACE
nomination as Best Stand-Up Comedy Special. It was part of a
self-proclaimed "Trilogy From Hell," which includes the earlier
"I'm In Pain" for Showtime and his second Ace-nominated special
"I'm Doomed" for HBO. His "Diary Of A Young Comic," which he
starred in and co-wrote, first aired on NBC in the "Saturday
Night Live" time slot and is now considered a cult classic.
Regarded by his peers as a 'comic's comic', Lewis' neuroses have
become a part of our language as in, "I had a date from Hell!"
In July 1995 Lewis performed live stand-up comedy for the first
time in over two years with his "Magical Misery Tour." Shot at
New York's historic Bottom Line HBO aired the one-hour special
in December 1996, making it a rare accomplishment in completing
his fourth hour cable special. In December of 1989, Lewis
achieved a very personal goal: he performed at Carnegie Hall to
a standing room only audience.
Elayne Boosler is best known for her thoughtful and feisty
political humor. In addition to her busy touring schedule, she
recently moderated NOW’s Democratic presidential candidates
debate in Washington, D.C. (NYTimes.com). Other recent
hosting/headlining duties include benefits for the Women Lawyers
Association of L.A. reception honoring Senator Barbara Boxer,
The Israel Humanitarian Foundation, Interval House Crisis
Shelters (three years running), Atlanta’s Fox Theater for
Gilda’s Club, George Washington University anti-war concert for
Code Pink, People For the American Way annual gala, numerous
past fundraisers for Comic Relief, Voter’s For Choice, Planned
Parenthood, the United Negro College Fund, the Lighthouse, Inc.,
MDA, and animal charities too numerous to mention.
Elayne’s political television
appearances include thirty-two visits to Politically
Incorrect with Bill Maher, CNN’s Crossfire, regularly
appearing on both Larry King’s election roundtable and CNN’s
post debate show during the last election. She toured colleges
on behalf of the Gore campaign, and hosted the five-hour
election night gala in Tennessee at the invitation of Mr. Gore.
She recently rallied the troops for Senator Hillary Clinton at a
get- out- the- vote rally, and was honored in October by the
Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project (WRRAP) for her
work on behalf of reproductive choice. She hosted the Voter’s
For Choice Constitution Hall Gala for Bill Clinton’s first
inauguration, was the comedian chosen to perform at his first
White House Press Correspondent’s Dinner, and performed at
Ford’s Theater in Washington again for the President and
congress. She last campaigned in New Hampshire for Governor
Jeanne Shaheen, and was invited to Washington by Senator Jack
Reed (R.I.) in recognition of her gun control work with the
Violence Policy Center.
Elayne has written for
Barron’s on finance, USA Today on sports, The New
York Times, Esquire, and was a regular columnist for
George Magazine. In December, Elayne wrote the
“Counterpunch” column in the L.A. Times. She has since been
named to the L.A. Times Comic’s Features Panel. She will also be
a featured “correspondent” in upcoming cartoon panels of the
popular syndicated Non-Sequitur strip by Wiley Miller. Their
first cartoon panel collaboration ran in February. In April
2004, Elayne was the keynote speaker at this year’s Association
of Editorial Cartoonists convention. She was recently featured
on VH-1’s “When Stand-up Comics Ruled the World”, and was named
as one of “Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Comics of All Time”.
Elayne’s non-profit animal
rescue and advocacy organization, “Elayne Boosler’s Tails of
Joy” (www.tailsofjoy.net)
is active across the country in cruelty cases, humane education
and awareness. To date, TOJ has raised and distributed funds to
over sixty rescues in twenty states. Elayne’s credits include
five (5) Showtime Comedy Specials, Comedy Central’s “100
Greatest Comics of all time”, numerous “Tonight Show”
appearances, “Comic Strip Live”, amongst others.
