Sing Out!
Fall 2001

David Gans on StageDAVID GANS, Solo Acoustic, (Perfectible 03). As host and producer of radio's Grateful Dead Hour, David Gans has already carved a nice niche for himself. His debut album as guitarist and singer is quite fine. Fifteen of the 16 selections are solo, and the other, Gillian Welch's "Tear My Stillhouse Down," adds Bobby Miller on mandolin and vocal. It is a live recording caught at club performances between April, 1999 and November, 2000. Not
surprisingly, David does some Dead songs. "Terrapin Station" is a particular favorite. Seven are Gans originals, some written with Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. "An American Family" and his Jerry Garcia tribute "Who Killed Uncle John" are the best of these. Gans is an excellent guitarist. His album is a fine and thought provoking companion. -- MT
