Project Object
Frank Zappa was one of the true originals in the world of modern
rock music, and his death in 1993 left quite a gap in the world
of pop. His music, never easy to play, required musicians to be
incredibly fluid and versatile, able to go from three-chord
rockers to faux classical pieces with odd time signatures.
One of his most nearly perfect efforts was the tale of rock
and roll-versus censorship on 1979's Joe's Garage, an album with
a tale still frighteningly valid today. While Zappa rarely
performed it in concert, the tribute band Project/Object
resurrected the three-record masterpiece with "Joe"
himself, vocalist-guitarist Ike Willis.
More than Frank Zappa's pointman for over a decade, more than
Joe in Joe's Garage, more than Thing Fish, Ike Willis is his own
man, with his own band. Nevertheless, he's still keeping the
music of his late friend and mentor alive by lending his vocals
and guitar to New Jersey tribute band Project/Object.
