Covering the work of Frank Zappa is a task as
daunting as blanketing the state of Delaware
with a snug-fitting sheet. For the last four
years the members of New York City's Project
Object -- Rick Bartow (bass and vocals), Jeff
Breedlove (keys), Andre Cholmondeley (guitar),
Mumbo (drums and keys) and Wes Paich (percussion
and keys) -- have been carefully recreating
Frank Zappa's ouevre, faithfully replicating the
master's twisted tunings and oblique voicings to
spot-on perfection. And with the inclusion of
longtime Zappa vocalist Ike Willis, Project
Object has become a living, breathing Zappa
fest.
Following in the quirky, soulful footsteps of
Flo & Eddie and Ray White, Willis was
handpicked by Zappa in 1978 and was almost
immediately thrown into his live show because of
(a) his overtly masculine gospel-operatic
tonsils, (b) his willing sense of humor, and (c)
the fact that he could sing songs like 'Why Does
It Hurt When I Pee?' and 'Dong Work for Yuda'
without sounding ridiculous. From 1978 until
Zappa's death in 1993, Willis contributed vocals
and guitar to classic albums such as 'Tinsel
Town Rebellion,' 'You Are What You Is' and the
mock-rock-opera 'Thing-Fish.' However, his most
famous Zappa moments may come during the often
moving (yet hilarious) tunes on Zappa's
three-volume epic, 'Joe's Garage.' -- A.D.
