CD REVIEWS: New music to help you beat the summer blues

STANDING ON THE SOUND, by the Seth Yacovone Band
Guitarist Seth Yacovone, who hails from Vermont, is one of the hottest
young
players around. In this self-released album, he touts his immense guitar
skills in a solid, hard-hitting set of blues-rock and boogie that's got
enough improvising to keep jam-band fans happy.
In many ways the band is like a younger version of Gov't Mule. The sound
is a
little stark in places and does go off-kilter on occasion (such as the
country-tinged 'Nighttime Fades') but when Yacovone lets rip with the
solos,
he simply sizzles.
This is most evident in the lively pace-shifting "Sweat Sauce"
and the
12-minute "Gnashing Golgothia Footstop Shindig Blues."
He is backed by the solid rhythm section of bassist Tommy Coggio and
drummer
Steve Hadeka.
Yacovone's vocals have taken on a more powerful and soulful tone from
his
previous albums. If the songs ever match up to the quality of the
musicianship, this guy will be huge.
