UNDERGIRL
Amy DiCamillo
- guitars/vocals ? Matthew Billick guitars
Frank
Domanico drums ? Becky Vomit- bass
The bands name may be inspired
by a certain 1960s cartoon superhero, but make no mistake
there is no mild-mannered alter-ego behind UNDERGIRL.
The perfect combo of rock hero attitude, indie street cred
and sex appeal, UNDERGIRL is raw aggression ready to
slap some life back into a sleepy music industry.
If the Dead
Boys and the Hot Snakes had a baby, named her
rock n roll, and she grew up to have the mouth of Mick
Jagger, the hair of MC5, the moves of Marc
Bolan, the mind of Syd Barret and the heart of
Nick Drake, you might begin to get the picture.
There is nothing better than
this band, pronounces frontwoman Amy DiCamillo.
The Courier-Post (N.J.) seconds that emotion by
naming UNDERGIRL one of the 10 must-see
Philadelphia area bands for
2005. Not to allow
DiCamillos red-hot bravado to be called false for a minute,
UNDERGIRL backs it up with a brand new release,
MY FLASH ON YOU 11-tracks of fast n furious
female-fronted punk rock straight from the City of Brotherly
Love.
MY FLASH ON
YOU features edgy instant classics like
Radio Action, Fancy Snakes, and the riot-grrls-rock
anthem Boys Club.
But how did this estrogen-infused band, with roots deep in
the guttural Sex Pistols 70s and branches that reach
beyond the new millennium, get started?
While doing time at West Chester
University, DiCamillo disc-jockeyed at the schools radio
station, spinning her modern rock favorites like R.E.M.,
The Clash, and Gene Loves Jezebel. There, she
met a slew of musicians who later moved to Philadelphia and
went on to form bands of their own. DiCamillo took
inspiration from her college companions and was sure she
could out-rock them all.
Hanging out on the Philly scene
and meeting friends of friends quickly led the singer to
meet up with guitarist Matthew Billick, drummer
Frank Domanico, and bassist
Annah Winfield. After a few quick personnel changes,
Winfield was replaced by a young woman who had picked up the
bass only six weeks prior. Her name, true-to-outrageous
form, is Becky Vomit. Oh, and the band members dont
necessarily always get along. But its the fight in them
that generates the tunes and makes the whole thing work its
magic. So it was that UNDERGIRL rocked live for the
first time on a Super Bowl Sunday.
MY FLASH ON YOU, like the bands 2001 full-length debut,
She's Too Much for My Mirror, was recorded at Slugg
Studios in Collingswood, NJ and produced by Kris Alutius.
By October of that same year, enthusiastic reviews propelled
their track My Girl all the way to acclaim Down Under
the song appeared on La Femme, No Homme? (She Loves
You Vol. 1), a compilation of female-driven bands on
independent Australian label, Half a Cow.
Onstage is where UNDERGIRL
really puts out. Theyve performed on the Warped Tour
have shared the spotlight with the likes of The Strokes,
Lunachicks, At the Drive-In and The New York Dolls
Sylvain Sylvain. But talking about the past of the
band bores me says DiCamillo. So onward, and away we go to
the future of new, raw rock with UNDERGIRL.
