TOP STARS ALIGNED FOR FREE CONCERTS AT McLAUGHLIN-NORCROSS
MEMORIAL DELL
HADDON HEIGHTS,
NJ – Only the best contemporary
folk, blues, rock and alternative country artists will be found in
the SUNDOWN MUSIC SERIES every other Wednesday throughout
this summer at the McLaughlin-Norcross Memorial Dell in
Haddon Heights.
The FREE series
kicks off June 1 with WXPN’S PHILLY LOCALS, featuring
MUTLU, KATE GAFFNEY and JOHN FRANCIS on the outdoor
stage in Haddon Heights, comfortably nestled in intimate, wooded
surroundings. New Orleans jazz and funk masters REBIRTH BRASS
BAND and gospel and blues-infused OLLABELLE are among
those brightening the Dell at sundown during the month of June,
while enigmatic songster LISA LOEB and established New
Orleans party outfit THE SUBDUDES keep July on the cutting
edge. Rockin’ soul singer DANIELIA COTTON is the first
August performer and classical pop singer-songwriter VIENNA TENG
and Philly’s own JIM BOGGIA finish off the series
August 24. Local and rising national talents get the
opportunity to share the spotlight as the opening act at every
performance. The Sundown Music Series is one of several free
outdoor music series being presented this summer by the Camden
County Board of Freeholders.
All three of WXPN’s PHILLY LOCALS have
been recognized as some of the best in the region, and are all
featured on WXPN’s Philly Local: Right On Track CD
compilation. Whether it's the soul, funk, jazz or hip-hop, there is
something in MUTLU's music that will resonate in your heart,
mind and soul. Mutlu is a singer, songwriter and musician of
uncommon caliber and soul. A budding singer-songwriter best known
for skillfully blending classic rock with today’s Americana, KATE
GAFFNEY is a self-professed “classic rock child” who discovered
key influences like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Janis Joplin by
rooting through her parents' "small but quality" vinyl record
collection. But it was in the company of talented musicians and
songwriters in Sacramento's small "Americana" music scene where
Gaffney honed her songwriting and musicianship.
JOHN FRANCIS’ passionate performances and eloquent songwriting
have recently drawn comparisons to U2’s Bono, Jeff Buckley, Bruce
Springsteen and Dylan. John’s distinctive voice, lyrically and
melodically, that captures his listeners and fans. Backed by his
prodigious six-piece band, or solo acoustic, he wins over new
audiences with every performance.
Forget Mardi
Gras, Camden County is bringing the sounds of New Orleans to the
Dell on June 15 with the REBIRTH BRASS BAND. Formed in 1983,
the band has long since graduated from the streets of New Orleans
and has become an institution, frequenting theaters and festivals
all over the world. ReBirth is committed to upholding the tradition
of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music.
Their signature brand of heavy funk has placed them among the
world’s top brass bands and made them the hands-down favorite among
the younger generation. New Orleans blues-rock singer Grace
Potter will open.
Sundown’s first month closes with a
June 29 performance from OLLABELLE. Drawing both inspiration
and materials from a deep well of rural American roots music —
including gospel, blues, bluegrass and country — Ollabelle
re-imagines these sounds for contemporary audiences, honoring the
spirit and substance of the original sources while allowing this
music to live and flourish in a post-modern era. Up-and-coming
college rock singer Ryan Montbleau will open.
With exquisite vocal interplay and
unique elements like the slide, accordion and hand-struck
tambourine, the SUBDUDES show why they are one of New
Orleans’ most established and acclaimed acts when they bring their
tour to Haddon Heights on July 13. Indeed, the SUBDUDES are a
treasure trove of blues, folk, R&B, country, cajun, funk, gospel,
and rock ’n’ roll. Local band Codename will open.
Combining her special and unique
talents as a singer-songwriter, LISA LOEB has shown the world
her ability to create music that touches the heart and stimulates
the mind, proving herself an artist on par with the best of her
generation. Loeb will make an exclusive stop at the Dell on July 27
with local band Holiday
opening. Fiercely
independent, savvy and driven, the multidimensional performer, who
started her career at the top of the charts when her debut song
“Stay (I Missed You)” landed the then-unsigned artist at No. 1,
continues to follow a singular, self-guided path.
Black isn’t always soul, blues, or
gospel. Listening to DANIELIA COTTON, you’re bound to
believe: Black is rock and roll. Danielia has built a powerhouse
alt/rock-blues sound that draws from influences like The Rolling
Stones, PJ Harvey and Led Zeppelin. 2 Walls Webzine raved of
her live New York sets: “That bluesy voice, her soulful guitar work
and her cover girl face make her a triple threat.” WXPN welcomes
South Jersey to experience its "Artist to Watch in 2005” on August
10, with singer-songwriter Griffin House opening.
WXPN also welcomes everyone to the
final show of Sundown Music Series on August 24 featuring classical
pop singer and pianist VIENNA TENG and Philly favorite JIM
BOGGIA.
As a youth, Jim Boggia absorbed and
synthesized the records of the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and
Stevie Wonder and came up with a variety of pop songs both old and
new, joyous and infectious. The former 4 Way Street member has built
a musical landscape broad enough to contain not just the requisite
bass, drums, guitars, but also glockenspiel, cellos, old funky
keyboards like Mellotrons and Optigans, newer technology like loops
and virtual synths, even toy pianos, slinkys and bounced
basketballs. And since he was named “Artist of the New Millennium”
at the 2000 Philadelphia Music Conference, maybe the pop song has a
future in the 21st century after all.
With her graceful melodies and
evocative lyrics, Vienna Teng has garnered critical acclaim and a
rapidly growing legion of fans throughout the world. Her stunning
sophomore release, Warm Strangers, is a diverse collection of
lush, melodic songs, incorporating Vienna's classical background and
folk sensibilities within a contemporary pop framework.
